Successor to the Grumman Wildcat, the F6F Hellcat made history in 1942 when it decisively whipped the Japanese carrier based fighters opposing it in the Pacific during World War 2. First flown on July 26th of that year, the Hellcat was the result of specifications laid down by a large group of fighter pilots polled by the officials of the Grumman Aircraft Company. In addition to its duty as a carrier-based fighter, the Hellcat served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a potent fighter-bomber.

JIM FALLS I built this kit as a teenager most of 55 years ago. The kit is essentially the same, but now they’re laser cut. In the past, the panels were die-cut, sometimes you get one done with a dull cutter. That took a lot of extra time, carefully re-scoring everything with a narrow Exacto blade so the pieces wouldn’t split. This kit is so crisp, it’s a joy to assemble. It’s fun seeing old reflexes come to life while assembling this baby. I only have the FW-190 from those years, but also built this one (the Hellcat), the Spitfire, Me-109, and the P-40. Good times!
